The crescent visibility map below for Shawwal 1443 shows that the moon will be born on 30 April 2022 at 20:28 GMT/UT, but it will not be visible by the naked-eye anywhere in the UK to Morocco region (or anywhere in the whole world) on that date. However, on 1 May 2022, the moon may not be seen in the UK (by the naked eye) but it is likely to be seen in the West African countries, including Morocco (Dakhla). Hence, the month of Shawwal is most likely to start from 2 May 2022, InShaAllah. Note that there will be a partial lunar eclipse on 30 April 2022 across South America and a total lunar eclipse on 15 - 16 May 2022 across Africa to the Americas.

Mr Syed Qadri commented: “It is totally cloudy before sunset and it is unlikely to clear after sunset”.


Southampton

Mr Tajammul Ali commented: “Negative sighting as full cloud coverage. Got to the site around 8 pm and left just after 9.10 pm. Amongst myself, there were approximately 120 witnesses who also joined in on the observation”.

Eng Qamar Uddin commented: “There was a group 5 of us at the YAS Observatory grounds to see the Shawwal 1443 Hilal but unfortunately, it was totally cloudy so the 23 hrs old moon was not seen.”.

Mr Akhlakuddin Razzaque commented: “This month I joined the group in Northala fields at the top of the hill. It was cloudy with a single break in the clouds. No chance to sight. It was a pleasant experience with the local community and my family joined (my wife and two young sons too)”.


Nelson (Barley - Pendle Hill)

Ms Shemanara Haq commented: “Negative sighting from Saltburn-by-the-Sea. Sunset 8.38 PM and moonset 9.38 PM. Naked eye observation was carried out until moonset time with Sister Lucy, 2 children and 3 non-Muslim adults. The photo was taken with iPhone 12 mini before sunset at 8.23 PM. Full cloud cover throughout the evening.”.

Tangiers

Seen after sunset: On 02 May 2022, ICOUK member Mr Hatim El-Harrak from Tangiers City in the Tangier-Tetouan Al-Hoceima County (Morocco) mentioned that the sky was Totally cloudy, the crescent was Seen by Naked-eye.

Mr Hatim El-Harrak commented: “The crescent of Shawwal 1443 AH was sighted (on the second night). [Submitted on 15/5/2022 - Admin]”.


Announcement for start of Shawwal 1443 AH

On Sunday 1st May 2022 (29th Ramadan 1443 AH) the Hilal of Shawwal 1443 was not sighted in the UK but it was sighted in the Morocco region. We have also received a positive sighting report from Morocco Awqaf Ministry.

Advice: As per the agreed ICOUK criteria, the month of Ramadan 1443 AH will have 29-days and the month of Shawwal 1443 AH will start from Monday 2nd May 2022, InShaAllah. Eid Mubarak to all Muslims (and don't forget to share your Hilal photo on the ICOUK website)!
