Crescent Moon Visibility of Safar 1444 AH

The crescent visibility map below for Safar 1444 (RHS) shows that the moon will be born on 27 August 2022 at 08:17 GMT/UT, but it will not be visible by the naked-eye anywhere in the UK to Morocco (MA) region on that date. However, on 28 August 2022 the moon may be easily visible in the UK and in most countries of the world. Hence, the month of Safar is most likely to start from 29 August 2022, InShaAllah.

Not seen after sunset: On 29 Jul 2022, ICOUK member Mr Akhlakuddin Razzaque from Croydon (Addington) City in the Greater London County (United Kingdom) mentioned that the sky was Partly Cloudy, the crescent was not seen by Naked-eye.

Mr Akhlakuddin Razzaque commented: "Tried a new location for me on Addington Hills viewing platform. Western horizon was visible, low clouds below 4° so the chance was there to see above the clouds for a little while. Decent location however no sighting on this occasion".

Maulana Hidayatullah Patel commented: "The weather map shows the East of UK had clear areas, west of UK was cloudy. [Submitted on 31/8/2022 - Admin]".

Not seen after sunset: On 27 Aug 2022, ICOUK member Mr Juned Patel from Morecambe City in the Lancashire County (United Kingdom) mentioned that the sky was Partly Cloudy, the crescent was not seen by Naked-eye or Binoculars or Telescope.

Mr Juned Patel commented: "On Saturday, 27th of August 2022 between 19:00 to 20:55 BST (Sunset 20:15 & Moonset 21:48) at Location: Morecambe, Lancashire, UK; I (Juned Patel) and Dr Aziz attempted to sight the crescent moon (Hilal) of Safar. We were not able to sight the Hilal. The western horizon was partially cloudy".

Not seen after sunset: On 27 Aug 2022, ICOUK member Mr Faruq Bilbe from Whitehaven City in the Cumbria County (United Kingdom) mentioned that the sky was Partly Cloudy, the crescent was not seen by Naked-eye.

Mr Faruq Bilbe commented: "Cloud on the horizon obscured any chance of sighting the moon this evening".


York (New Earswick)

Not seen after sunset: On 27 Aug 2022, ICOUK member Eng Qamar Uddin from York (New Earswick) City in the North Yorkshire County (United Kingdom) mentioned that the sky was Partly Cloudy, the crescent was not seen by Naked-eye.

Eng Qamar Uddin commented: "The weather was mostly sunny but partly cloudy near sunset point (which was clearly seen), but the moon was not seen. Most of the UK was clear or partly cloudy too (see MetOffice weather forecast screenshot)".

Mr Hatim El-Harrak commented: "In the name of Allah the Most Merciful. Today, Saturday, Muharram 29, 1444 AH, corresponding to August 27, 2022 AD, [after] Maghrib I attempted to spot the crescent of Safar al-Khair 1444 AH from Tangier, but it was not possible to sight the crescent from Tangier. Thus, according to the official announcement, the first of Safar 1444 AH is on Monday, August 29, 2022 AD. May Allah bless us and you with goodness. Ameen".

Not seen after sunset: On 28 Aug 2022, ICOUK member Maulana Hidayatullah Patel from Blackburn (Mellor) City in the Lancashire County (United Kingdom) mentioned that the sky was Totally Cloudy, the crescent was not seen by Naked-eye.

Maulana Hidayatullah Patel commented: "It was totally cloudy, and some rain".

Mr Juned Patel commented: "On Saturday, 28th of August 2022 between 19:30 to 21:00 BST (Sunset 20:09 & Moonset 20:57) at Location: Belmont Road, Bolton, UK; I (Juned Patel) and twelve other people attempted to sight the crescent moon (Hilal) of Safar 1444. We were not able to sight the Hilal. The western horizon was completely cloudy".

Not seen before sunset: On 28 Aug 2022, ICOUK member Mr Modoris Ali from Cradley Heath City in the West Midlands County (United Kingdom) mentioned that the sky was Totally Cloudy, the crescent was not seen by Naked-eye.

Mr Modoris Ali commented: "I could not see the moon when I was walking to the Mosque for Maghrib prayer. After Maghrib prayer, when I was returning home I still [could not see the moon] and the weather was too cloudy".

Mr Waseem Dar commented: "I could not see the moon. It was cloudy and a tree obstructed the view in the final degrees of probable path of moon set".

Seen after sunset: On 28 Aug 2022, ICOUK member Mr Akhlakuddin Razzaque from Haytor Vale City in the Dartmoor County (United Kingdom) mentioned that the sky was Partly Cloudy, the crescent was Seen by Naked-eye and Binoculars.

Mr Akhlakuddin Razzaque commented: "I was on holiday in Exeter (Dunsford) and came to Haytor in Dartmoor with my brother-in-law, Imran Khan. I can testify that we both saw the Hilal of Safar [first by binoculars and then] by the naked eye from the top of Haytor on the horizon, in a break in the clouds. الحمد لله Unfortunately my camera battery died, but I have an image of the screen as a backup".

Not seen after sunset: On 28 Aug 2022, ICOUK member Maulana Yusuf Mota from Leeds City in the West Yorkshire County (United Kingdom) mentioned that the sky was Totally Cloudy, the crescent was not seen by Naked-eye or Binoculars.

Maulana Yusuf Mota commented: "I was present at the location before and after sunset. However, today 28/08/22 at Sunset and after sunset it was total overcast so no sighting of the moon crescent of Safar 1444".

Ms Julie Breen commented: "The sky was partly cloudy, but the cloudy cover was dense in the area where the moon could have been sighted".

Ms Shemanara Haq commented: "Negative sighting from Saltburn by the Sea. Sunset time 20:06 and moonset 20:52. Observation carried out with Sr Lucy and Sr Julie, 2 non-Muslim sisters and 4 children. The sky was complete cloud cover. The first photo was taken half an hour before sunset and the second photo was taken half an hour after. [Submitted on 31/8/2022 - Admin]".

Eng Qamar Uddin commented: "It was totally cloudy and raining in York today (28/8/2022) so the moon was not sighted, but others had better luck from South of the UK, Alhamdulillah".

Announcement for start of Safar 1444 AH

On Saturday 27th August 2022 (29th Muharram 1444 AH in MA) the Hilal of Safar 1444 was not sighted in the UK to Morocco (MA) region. We have also received a negative sighting report from Morocco Awqaf Ministry (login to view).

Therefore, the start of the month based on the Regional (UK – MA) and Local (UK-only) Moon Sighting criteria are given below.

Regional (UK - MA): the month of Muharram 1444 will complete 30-days and the month of Safar 1444 AH will start from Monday 29th August 2022, InShaAllah.

Local (UK-only): the month of Muharram 1444 will have 29-days and the month of Safar 1444 will start from Monday 29th August 2022, InShaAllah. [Note: on 28th August 2022, the Hilal of Safar was sighted in the UK (also in Bangladesh and Pakistan, but not in India]
