Shaykh Sulayman Gani commented: "I came to Riddelsdown Common 40 minutes before sunset. Brother Zulfikaar joined me with his family joined me 20 minutes later. We were able to get a glimpse of the sun but could not see the actual setting of the sun. It disappeared behind the thick clouds about 25 minutes before the actual sunset time. I recorded and educational programme. Many more arrived. After Maghrib salah about 20 of us observed the western horizon .we could not see the over 16 hours old moon. The western horizon was cloudy".

Altitude: 220m Height. The Crescent moon was sighted first with the naked eye at 21:28 to the left of Sunset and orientation was from 1 to 7 O’clock, It was visible till 21:40 and then disappeared behind the clouds.".

Hafiz Asad Mulla commented: "On Friday 2nd August, a few people from Hackney went to Hackney Marshes to sight the moon. There were 2 male adults, 1 female adult, 1 15 year old boy and approx 8 children. I, Asad Mulla, reached the site at 8:50 pm and the others were already onsite we attempted to sight straight away but could not see the moon. We read Maghrib and then has a look through binoculars and I was able to sight the moon. A few others also sighted through binoculars and then about 9:20 pm we all saw the moon without any optical aid. We saw the moon for about 3 mins and then the clouds covered the moon. We then saw the moon very faint again about 9:40 for only about a minute [Report submitted 14/8/2019 - Admin]".

After Maghrib Salaah we climbed to the roof and I spotted the moon very easily with the naked eye. For health and safety reasons, only a few of us were allowed to use the roof of the building for the moon sighting. We stayed as long as we could to see the hilal until about 9:45 pm [Report submitted 3/8/2019 - Admin]".

Mr Mohammad Baig commented: "Easily seen despite partially cloudy horizon. I caught its first glimpse in thin clouds but lost it. After a little patient and wait, it came out in a clear area almost perfect crescent".

Eng Qamar Uddin commented: "We had an astronomy lecture and a moon sighting training session in York today (2/8/2019), which was attended by about 20 people, plus a few astronomers from York Astronomical Society. Feedbacks from the public were very positive, but unfortunately, it was totally cloudy after sunset so the moon was not seen. Fortunately, other parts of the UK were clear and many people have sighted the moon, Alhamdulillah. Today was the 29th Dhul Qaidah, according to UK-only moon sighting counts (but 30th Dhul Qaidah based on borrowed sighting from abroad!)".

Announcement for start of Dhul Hijjah 1440 AH
On Thursday 1st August 2019 (29th Dhul Qa'dah 1440 AH) the Hilal of Dhul Hijjah 1440 was not sighted in the UK/Morocco region. We have also received a negative sighting report from Morocco Awqaf Ministry (login to view).
Therefore, the month of Dhul Qa'dah 1440 AH will completed 30-days and the month of Dhul Hijjah 1440 AH will start from Saturday 3rd August 2019 (making Eid-ul Adha to be on Monday 12 August 2019), InShaAllah.
Significance of Dhul Hijjah (first 10 days)
1. Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه) reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "There are no days during which the righteous action is so pleasing to Allah than these days (i.e., the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah)." He was asked: "O Messenger of Allah, not even Jihad in the Cause of Allah?" He (ﷺ) replied, "Not even Jihad in the Cause of Allah, except in case one goes forth with his life and his property and does not return with either of it." (Bukhari, Book 9, Hadith 259)
2. Abu Qatadah (رضي الله عنه) reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) was asked about the observance of Saum (fasting) on the day of Arafah (9th of Dhul Hijjah). He said, "It is an expiation for the sins of the preceding year and the current year." (Muslim, Book 9, Hadith 260)

Note: We have received reliable reports from Saudi Arabia that none of the official Hilal Committee astronomers were able to sight the moon (12 hours old) on 1st August 2019, but the usual early-sighers from near Riyadh (Sudair/Tomair) have claimed a sighting and the court had accepted it. Saudi Scientist believes this is caused by the psychological bias of the Ummul Qura calendar date (running ahead of visibility), creating an image of the crescent moon inside the memory of the witnesses, even though it is not possible to be physically sighted by the human eye.
The advice of Saudi Ulama to Muslims outside Saudi Arabia is they should not follow the moon sighting reports of Saudi Arabia and should make their own arrangement based on the Sunnah of local sighting. (Ref: Is Eid-ul Adha connected with Hajj?).
